What is a cookie?

A cookie is a file that is placed by your browser on your computer when you surf the Internet. This file is composed only of texte (it is a text file). It is therefore completely harmless. 

This file is generated by the server of the site that  you are viewing and is sent to your Internet browser. It is the browser that will save the file to your hard drive. (because the server does not have direct access to your computer).
